How Found at School uses artificial intelligence

Found at School, a product of Line Lead, Inc., a Delaware corporation, uses one artificial-intelligence feature: when school staff photograph a found item, the three photos of that item are described by an AI vision service (operated by Anthropic) so the app can suggest which lost-item report it may match.

What the AI sees. Only photos of found belongings, fetched through links that expire within an hour. It never sees a child's name, grade, teacher, a parent's account, or a family's lost-item report.

What it is told to do, and not to do. It returns the item's category, colors, brand, size, and distinctive features such as wear, damage, patches, or stickers. It is instructed not to read handwriting, names, initials, phone numbers, addresses, or classroom or teacher names, and not to describe any person. Its answers are filtered again on Found at School's servers to remove quoted text and personal descriptors before anything is stored.

How the result is used. The description is compared with the details parents entered about their lost items to suggest possible matches. Each suggestion shows the reasons behind it. The AI does not decide anything: a parent confirms whether a suggested item is their child's, and school staff hand items back in person.

Faces. Before a photo is uploaded, the app blurs any face it detects on the device, and the server checks every photo again with a second model. A photo whose check cannot be verified is held for a person to review before it is processed.

Retention. Photos and descriptions of found items are deleted 90 days after the item was found, unless the district sets a different period. Items a family registers stay until the family removes them.

Provider. Anthropic processes the photos only to return the description. The district may request Anthropic's data-handling terms from Found at School.
